If you want to keep your computer safe from hackers, there are a few steps to take. Some things you can do on your own, but others require an expert. For example, make sure your passwords all have at least six characters, preferably a combination of letters and numbers. This can make it hard for others to guess your password when trying to log in to sites that contain your personal information, such as your bank website. Just be sure to keep a copy of your passwords somewhere that only you have access to. In addition, use an antivirus program to keep viruses from entering your computer.

These tips are free to implement, but if you are already using them and still have computer security issues, you may have to pay for an expert’s help. You can find computer experts near you when you check out local search engines, such as Canada 411. This will allow you to get the contact information of someone who can help. The businesses you find can simply offer a few tips, or they can come out and fix any computer issues you are having.

You can use the Internet to find other free ways to keep your computer secure, too. For example, there are websites devoted to offering tips on avoiding viruses, protecting your network and making secure passwords. If you try out the ideas offered, and they do not do enough to protect your computer, then you know it is time to check out local search engines like Canada 411 in order to find computer professionals.

Antivirus Protection Is a Must

Antivirus protection is a tool to help protect against invading viruses and other threatening types of content, emails, or other transmissions to your computer. A virus can enter your company through any Internet connection, such as through email messages, downloads, or by clicking on the wrong link on a website. Without some type of protection, your computer and other computers on your network could stop working, or worse.

How This Protection Works

Installing an antivirus program on your computer is the first step to protecting yourself. There are several things this type of software does for you. First, the software forms a shield around your computer. Anything being transmitted into or out of your system receives clearance to do so. If you try to open an email with an attachment that may contain a virus, the software will stop you and give you its reasons for “being concerned.”

Another way that this protection works is by scanning your current system. It will scan your system on a regular basis to find any type of hidden information, programs, or viruses that could be harming or could do harm in the future. The computer user should have these scans set up to run automatically at least daily. The scans remove anything potentially harmful for you.

The best antivirus software available continuously updates itself to ensure it has the best information and resources to track viruses. In addition to virus protection, the software should also be looking for spyware, malware, and spam. All of these types of threats can harm your system. By remaining up to date, the software program is able to keep protecting you even as hackers and thieves develop new loopholes to get into your system.

The right antivirus suite is critical for maintaining the integrity of your Internet connection. It helps protect your privacy and your personal data. Without it, your system could be damaged and critical information could be compromised.

An operating system is a program that manages the computer hardware. Operating system acts as an intermediary between the computer hardware and the user and also provides a basis for application programs. An astonishing aspect of operating system is how varied they are in achieving these tasks for the computer. Mainframe operating systems are intended first and foremost to optimize consumption of hardware. Personal computer operating systems support complex business applications, games and everything in between the user and hardware. This is the basic need of a computer to be run because the instructions are directly given to the hardware with the help of operating system.
The operating system is a large and complex set of instructions therefore it must be created piece by piece so that the problem which comes in the development of software can be handled and should be take care of. Each of the pieces should be well defined in context to the system which carefully defines the input, output, and the functions given by the user to the hardware.
For use in hand-held computers the operating systems are designed in sequence to provide the environment in which the user can easily interface with the hardware to execute the various programs. Therefore some of the operating systems are designed to be convenient with the user, others to be efficient with the users and some of them are designed as the combination of both of them. The operating system is a software or asset of instructions that intimately involve with the hardware to execute the different types of operations given by the user. Therefore we can also say the operating system as a resource allocator which allocates all the resources needed by the hardware to accomplish the command provided by the user. Operating system is especially concerned with the operation and control of I/O devices.

The Basics of Internet Security

The internet, also known as the “World Wide Web”, is increasingly the place to obtain information on all aspects of life. In addition to getting information, it is also an open marketplace for shopping worldwide, watching movies, listening to music, and downloading various documents and programs. Due to the massive amount of people on the web performing these functions at any given time, there are security risks involved. Dishonest people attempt to infect your system with a virus so that they may break down your system while stealing your personal info. For this reason, it is essential that you have an up to date anti virus program running at all times.

There is also unwanted email, called spam, to deal with. In addition to contacting you illegally, these emails often try to trick you into providing personal information to a third party. One of the ways in which they have been successful with this is by sending you an email that looks like it came from a company that you actually do business with. The email will then ask you to click a link and enter your personal information. This is called “phishing” if the link takes you to a third party that steals your password or other sensitive information. In order to prevent this from ever happening to you, do not click links in emails. Instead, go to a new window and log in to the site directly. If the request was legitimate, you will have a note about it in the account that you log in to.

Another suggestion for safe web browsing is making sure you are on a secure connection when doing things online that are private, such as banking or paying bills. Additionally, even if you have an anti virus program already in place, you may want to look for a separate program that scans for ad-ware programs, which are slightly different than a virus.

What’s Involved in Computer Security

The term “computer security” might be better known as “information security”. As you may have noticed, this term drives home that the point of keeping your computer secure is to keep your information secure. It is a protection for all networks and computers from various attacks such as hackers, viruses, worms, trojans, and et cetera, while ensuring that all of the information that needs to be accessed by the end users remains available to the end users. This is extremely important because most of the time the end user is an employee that needs to access such information so that they can do their jobs and help a corporation make money.

For example, if a billing department could not access payment information, they would not be able to help customers understand their bills. Blocking this type of information from employees would keep the information secure, but it would be counter productive. Corporations generally have entire departments set apart for the purpose of working on information security and architecture. The people in these departments work to design programs that put restrictions on the computer network’s programs and functionality that would otherwise have allowed information leaks and attacks. They are trained to look for areas of vulnerability and counter act them. The most well known programs that stop attacks in their tracks are called anti virus programs, and are usually used in conjunction with the security designed into the office’s programming.

In addition to this security by design in the software and programming, there are also hardware options available to add increased security to the network. It is the same department that would handle the research necessary to see which hardware implementations would work well with the company’s network and computer system. Computer security is extremely critical in almost all companies due to the fact that almost all companies either have an online presence or use computers to do their business or keep track of their business.

How to Protect Your Computer from Being Hacked

Almost everyone that uses a computer to go on the internet is at risk of having their computer hacked into. The trick is to be well educated about what to do to prevent this from happening so that you do not have your confidential and sensitive information hacked. Both your operating system and router, if applicable, have firewalls that can be adjusted. It is recommended that you keep these on the highest security level possible. Some sites or networks that you may need to access may demand that you turn off the firewalls. Only follow these instructions if it is a site or network that you trust because turning off the firewalls can allow open access to your information.

Another thing you will want to do is make sure your anti virus system is automatically updating daily to keep your system protected. Other tips for safety include not opening attachments in emails from unknown senders, not clicking links in emails even if you do know the sender, and limiting what you download or install on your computer to trusted sources. Recently, there have been a vast amount of attacks on computers through applications on Facebook. Exercise extreme caution if you use any Facebook applications or play their games online.

In addition, be wary of sites that may place a tracking cookie or ad ware on your computer. Sometimes these are ways of hacking your computer without infecting you with a virus that your anti virus system will recognize. There are programs available to download or purchase that can scan and remove ad ware if your anti virus software does not already include this option. You will also want to be wary of sites that use Active-X downloads, as this seems to be one of the ways that viruses spread most frequently.

Anti-Virus Software: Norton 360

Probably the most important thing anyone with a computer can do for their computer is install some type of Anti-Virus software. There are just too many bad things floating around in cyberspace that can demolish your computer if you aren’t careful. However, the problem most people face is deciding which Anti-Virus software to purchase. Norton has always been a lead producer of this software and has just released Norton 360.

Norton 360 has several advantages over other Anti-Virus software, including the Norton Internet Security 2007. One of the greatest things about Norton 360 is that it provides pretty comprehensive coverage for the average computer user. Basically, this has everything the casual person needs for complete internet security. For example, you have antivirus, antiphishing, antispyware, antirootkit protection, SONAR, a vulnerability assessment tool and a firewall. That is all with the Norton 360.

As far as coverage is concerned, it has also been said to provide internet users with much more protection than McAfee Total Protection and Windows Live OneCare. Norton 360 shouldn’t bog your computer down as much as the other Norton products did as it only uses about 300MB of your hard drive space. While this is less than the required megabytes for Windows Live OneCare, it is much more (close to double) that of McAfee Total Protection.

Norton 360 installs an easy-access toolbar at the top of your screen which gives you the ability to instantly perform quick computer scans. One of the “issues” users may face is the fact that to change the firewall settings, one must go through the toolbar instead of the various modules. However, for the average computer user, this won’t be an issue – it’s just a little bit inconvenient for the semi-serious computer users. Really, the only setback to Norton 360 is that it doesn’t provide coverage for Moxilla Firefox or Opera…just Internet Explorer. For most people, this isn’t really a setback at all.

Anti-Virus Software: McAfee Total Protection

Searching for the right Anti-Virus software can be both time consuming and frustrating, especially if you don’t quite know what you’re looking for. One of the biggest names in the Anti-Virus software world is Norton, particularly the new Norton 360 software. However, McAfee is also being used more and more. There are several key differences that McAfee Total Protection software has that Norton 360 doesn’t, all of which you should know before you make a decision as to what product to secure your computer with.

The first notable difference between McAfee Total Protection and Norton 360 is the amount of “weight” it puts on your computer. McAfee is a lot lighter for your computer than Norton 360 as it only takes up 175MB. This may affect your computers speed when doing basic functions. However, Norton 360 has been designed to use less space than other Norton products in the past.

Secondly, McAfee Total Protection comes with wireless protection tools. This is important for those of you that use laptops connected to wireless networks. Most people just assume that Norton 360, as well as the other Norton products, have this also…they don’t. If you connect to the internet through a wireless connection much of the time, especially at home, McAfee Total Protection may be a better choice for you, but there is still something else to consider.

McAfee Total Protection provides you with Anti-Virus coverage when you use Moxilla Firefox as your browser. However, Norton 360 only supports Internet Explorer. Many people love using Firefox because it is more convenient and sometimes a little quicker than Internet Explorer. If you are one of these people, then McAfee Total Protection is a better choice.

Finally, one of the drawbacks with McAfee Total Protection is that it isn’t as user friendly as Norton 360. All that means is that the system can stand to be made simpler, but for the most part McAfee Total Protection provides decent Anti-Virus protection.

New Program Neutralizes Computer Virus

If you’ve ever had your computer attacked by a virus, you know the devastation it can wreak. Even with an anti-virus program installed on your machine, you can still lose access to your files and data, especially if the virus attacks your registry.

The solution to this problem may be a new security program designed to neutralize viruses after they invade your system. This new program, designed by Christopher Kruegel, can identify viruses, regardless of whether the virus has a signature. Once found, it works to negate the damage.

Kruegel, who works with UC Santa Barbara as an associate professor of computer science, began working on the program after seeing statistics from anti-virus companies regarding the number of system crashes. According to Kruegel, these companies try to stop viruses by looking at the end result. The tools scan systems in search of viruses with certain signatures and try to block them from entering. That’s one reason why anti-virus programs can’t help once the viruses or malware get into the machine.

With this new program showing promise, Kruegel has joined with two colleagues to create LastLine, Inc. Engin Kirda works with the Institute Eurecom in France as a computer science professor. Giovanni Vigna is a computer science professor with UCSB. As a company, the group will focus on developing their program with special focus on botnets and bots.

The theory behind LastLine is that a virus can be on your computer without harming it, provided you can keep the virus from communicating with the host server. If you are able to break this connection, the virus fails to initiate the harmful commands from the malicious server.

Kruegel’s idea is already gaining recognition within the industry. The Technology Review awarded Kruegel a place on its TR35 list, which celebrates the top 35 innovations from people under the age of 35.

With LastLine geared to work alongside traditional anti-spam programs, better protection will be here soon.

Windows XP Security Center

Quad OS - MacOS X, Windows XP, SUSE 10, FreeBSD

Windows XP is an operating system that came with more advanced security by including a security center within the system. Everything to configure and find information is located in this area and is easily found in the control panel under the security center shield (icon).

This Windows XP security center has three fundamental processes aimed at protecting the user. These are the automatic updates, firewall and virus protection. They are beneficial in keeping the system safe from security threats.

The virus protection is somewhat misleading. This is not actually a virus protection software program. What this does is monitor what you have installed on your computer in the form of anti-virus software. If you do not have anti-virus software, this program lets you know. If you do have the anti-virus software then it allows you to know that you are protected. There are different icons that perform different tasks such as notifications of potential risks, security settings, showing a situation may be harmful, a “green light” showing that your computer is up to date and safe, and an X that states that the settings are at risk.

Automatic updates are excellent in keeping Windows XP up to date with the latest protection against security issues and viruses.

The Windows XP Firewall provides a little protection when surfing the web. However, this is something that does not quarantine or disable viruses, nor does it detect them. It doesn’t protect against harmful attachments or does it stop spam attacks. This is why anti-virus software is needed. It is simply a tool that helps block the worms and viruses that may infect your system. It has a handy security log that is created when a potential problem has arisen.

Using all of these programs along with anti-virus software can help ensure that your computer system is more safe from harmful attacks.
